Tanning/Unprotected Sun Exposure:
UV damage is the leading cause of premature aging, wrinkles and skin discoloration. Yes, there really is a Holy Grail anti-aging product. It is called sunscreen. Wear sunscreen everyday, year round and reapply often.
Being Harsh on the Eyes:
The skin surrounding the eyes is thin and delicate. Being too rough on the skin when applying products, tugging at the eye area when inserting contacts, rubbing eyes or removing makeup roughly can cause creepiness and speed the aging process. Always use your ring finger when applying eye cream, as it is your weakest digit and dab the product on rather than rubbing it in.
Not Removing Your Makeup at Night:
Makeup, dirt, pollution and allergens collect and stick to the surface of the skin. Makeup can prevent the skin from breathing and impair the natural skin cycle in which dead skin cells sloth off. Not removing these nightly can lead to enlarged pores and skin irritations.
Lack of Sleep:
Beauty sleep is a real thing. At night our bodies (and skin) are in a reparative mode. Some hormones are at their most balanced during the night and affect metabolic changes within the body. So catch some zzzs and your face will be pleased.
Sleeping on your side or on your stomach with your face smushed into the pillow increases wrinkles on the sides of the face, brows and cheeks. Train yourself to sleep on your back. A light fitting eye mask may make it more comfortable. Satin pillowcases or specialized beauty pillows will also allow your skin to glide across the surface of the case, rather than scrunching the skin into it.
Not Wearing Sunglasses or Proper Prescription Glasses:
Constant repetitive motions like squinting cause fine lines around the eyes. Wear sunglasses regularly and even on cloudy days to protect your eyes and the surrounding tissue from the damaging, aging (UVA) rays of the sun. Schedule eye exams every two years to ensure your prescription is correct.
Beside the obvious dangers, smoking inhibits proper blood flow and ages the skin. Wrinkles around the mouth become more visible when the collagen and other connective tissues are broken down. Skin tone and vibrancy is also affected.
Not Eating Enough Fruits and Vegetables:
Aside from being low in calorie and high in fiber, fruits and veggies are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free radical damage and some have a role in preventing free radials from even forming. Free radical damage leads to aging and disease. Eat a variety as they all contain different vitamins, minerals and flavionoids to nourish the body and the skin.
