Below are five common rosacea myths with information to help you correct these false assumptions to become more aware of what Rosacea is and what causes Rosacea flareups.
Myth 1: Coffee and Caffeine Cause Flare-ups
Fact - The thermal heat of warm beverages, coffee included, is what commonly triggers a Rosacea flareup. Coffee and caffeine is not the trigger.
Myth 2: Rosacea is Caused by Not Washing Your Face
Fact - Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene. Too much cleansing and use of products with harsh ingredients are known to worsen Rosacea symptoms.
Myth 3: Rosacea is Contagious
Fact - Rosacea cannot be caught.
Myth 4: Rosacea = Acne
Fact - Rosacea and acne are not the same. There are some common symptoms such as small, pus-filled red bumps, but the causes and treatment are different.
Myth 5: Rosacea Is Caused by Heavy Drinking
Drinking alcohol is a known Rosacea trigger but it is not the cause of the condition.
Myth 6: Rosacea Is Caused by Consuming Spicy Foods
Consuming spicy foods is a known Rosacea trigger but it is not the cause of the condition. Spicy foods that are known Rosacea triggers include: black pepper, paprika, red pepper, and cayenne pepper.
