The beaches are no longer a bright collage of towels and umbrellas, the BBQ invites have stopped arriving. The nights are now chilly and the leaves are transitioning into golden and fiery hues. Saying goodbye to summer may leave you feeling a bit melancholy, but do not let it do the same to your skin.
The change in seasons can be a shock to the health of the epidermis. As the air becomes drier, so does our skin, leaving it feeling tight, flaky, even red and over sensitized. Simple changes in our skincare regime can return it to a state of balance and even combat the damage it endured over the summer months.
Cleansers: During the summer our skin naturally produces more oil and sebum, so that foaming or oil stripping cleanser you used in July may reek havoc on your face come October. While some people may prefer a foaming cleanser, there are a variety of milk or cleansing waters that are perfect for oily or dry skin. Many include moisture binders such as hylauronic acid to keep the skin hydrated.
Cleanser recommendations-
Wilma Schumann Soothing Cleanser
Wilma Schumann Balancing Cleanser
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
Rodial Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Water
Exfoliation: While everyone should be exfoliating year round, many people do not think about it until they are experiencing flaky rough patches or are trying to conceal their hyperpigmentation and freckles caused by damaging UV rays. Cleansing devices, leave on treatments and exfoliating mask are all effective in removing dead skin buildup while also combating dull or discoloration in the skin.
Exfoliation recommendations-
FOREO Luna
Clarisonic
Wilma Schumann Glycolic Plus
iS Clinical Exfoliating Enzyme Treatment
Moisturizers: If you have oily skin, you may have skipped moisturizer all together during the summer. Those with more mature skin may have opted for a lighter formula as heavy creams lead to sweating or makeup slipping, but as the air cools and become drier, you may need a more intense dose of moisture.
Moisturizer recommendation-
O2 Oxygen Blu
Reluma Advanced Facial Moisturizer
CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotions
Rodial Bee Venom Moisturizer
Sun protection: It does not matter if summer is over, do not put away your SPF as it needs to be worn year round. We are affected by UV damage no matter the temperature or how bright the sun seems. Whether it is sitting by an office window, driving in the car or participating in outdoor fall activities you are being exposed to damaging UV rays. The majority of UVA rays penetrate through cloud cover.
Sun protection recommendations-
Rodial Dragon’s Blood Moisturizer SPF 15
La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Anti-aging Primer
COOLA Mineral Face SPF 20
Elta MD UV Physical SPF 41
Change may not be so bad after all, when it comes to your skin products at least. There is no need to commit to one product or skin care routine year round. Your skin’s health can be improved when you change your skincare with the changing seasons.
