Tis the season for everyone’s favorite(or dreaded) holiday party game, The White Elephant Gift Exchange. Your family decided to have one this year and you have been invited. But what should you get? If you are struggling with your White Elephant list, I have a few suggestions below that are sure to be a hit at your party, but first let’s discuss how the game is played.
The basic idea of a White Elephant is that the host sets a price point, maybe a theme and everyone who is participating brings a wrapped gift to the party to be exchanged. Everyone gets a chance to choose a gift or steal a gift from someone else who already chose theirs. There are a few different variations out there but the official rules can be found here.
Going into this I try to wrap mine in a way that helps disguise what is inside. Sometimes I will wrap it with a really large box, often reusing something I have on hand at home. If you are with a group you know has a good sense of humor, you can also add a brick in the box to weigh it down. Imagine the look on their face when they unwrap it only to find out something smaller is inside the box.
When selecting gifts I like to go through my“must try” list, products that I have tried, loved and would like to gift to others, or things I have seen that I know someone at the party would like. Also trendy and hard to find gifts are always a hit.
Here are some of my favorites at different price points that I would take to a White Elephant party.
Personally, I love White Elephant parties. I like to see everyone interacting and fighting over the really big gift that usually ends up being something nobody really wanted in the first place. It’s a great ice breaker at home parties when you are gathering people who may not know each other and it is always a game filled with laughter and cheer, just like the holidays should be.
